In the 1980s, smaller and medium-sized retailers in the consumer electronics and domestic appliances sector realised they needed to respond to increasing globalisation and the structural changes in the business environment that this was bringing about. They needed to develop a new business model that would give them the scale to compete on a level playing field in this changed environment, while retaining advantages such as higher quality staff, greater product expertise and personal customer service.
A number of far-sighted retailers decided that the solution would be to join together to form national and regional buying groups. Their vision was first realised in 1990, when store groups in Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands came together to found EURONICS.
